Maintenance Engineering EAL SVQ Level 3
These Level 3 SVQs are work based qualifications that are suitable for people working in an engineering environment. These courses are suitable for ALL ages from young apprentices (16 – 19) to mature semi-skilled employees. The learner meets with his assessor usually on a monthly basis and submits logs (personal statements) as well as answer unit knowledge questions to the assessor. The work can also be submitted electronically, if this is more desirable. The learner has to build a portfolio of evidence to obtain the qualification and assure his employer and future employers his/her competence in the industry.
The programme normally takes from about 12 months to 2 years to complete, depending on the experience and work ethics of the learner. The assessor will also observe the learner in the workplace and .
What subjects will I study?
Subject studied will include:
• Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements.
• Reading and using engineering drawings and specifications.
• Working efficiently and effectively in engineering.
Other units will be set into a qualification pathway to suit the needs of the student and the employer, as detailed below.
How will I be assessed?
The SVQ is assessed on practical work in the work place and a portfolio of work. It also includes questioning to show an underpinning knowledge of engineering work, and is assessed by a trained assessor coming into your working environment and assessing you on real installations that you are working on.
For apprentices or semi skilled workers this programme/training gives the complete coverage of hands on practical assessments making a competent and highly skilled worker
How long is the course?
The SVQ is work-based and is designed to reflect the skills and knowledge of people who work in the engineering industry. The qualification is taken over 12-24 months depending on each individual.

Site Safety Plus
Site Safety Plus
The Site Safety Plus Scheme provides the building, civil engineering and allied industries with a framework for training and career development, for all levels of the workforce.
The Scheme recognises a natural progression, from someone new to the industry through to those responsible for managing construction work. Starting with a health and safety awareness day to prepare for the Health and Safety Test, and progressing to an intermediate level for those about to have supervisory responsibilities. There is then and an advanced level for those with management responsibilities.
The courses on offer are:
- Health and Safety Awareness (HSA)
- Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS)
- Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) Refresher
- Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)
- Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) Refresher
- Directors Role for Health and Safety
- Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme (SEATS)
- Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme Plus (SEATS+)
Level 4: Health and Safety in the Building Services Industry
Health and Safety in the Building Services Industry: Unit code: DP17 34
This module is part of the HNC in Building Services Engineering programme, which also lies within the construction framework. It is also delivered by distance learning.
This core Unit will introduce the candidate to a wide range of health and safety issues applicable to the Building Services Industry.
On completion of the Unit the candidate should be able to:
Define the main health and safety legislation in the building services sector
Explain the main requirements of an effective health and safety policy.
Demonstrate an understanding of hazard and risk identification in relation to the design and construction of an appropriate installation.
Undertake a risk assessment appropriate to the work area of the candidate.

Leakshooter Videos
The Ultrasonic compressed air / gas leak detector “Leakshooter” in action. For more details of the leakshooter. Please go to www.leakshooter.co.uk
Accessories
The Leakshooter comes in a sturdy silver case, complete with headset, charger, USB cable plus software.
Leakshooter plus standard equipment in Silver case
The Leakshooter also has a customised cover and a carry strap, which is hung around the neck. This is ideal for the user when working for long spells with the leakshooter. There is then NO possibility of dropping the leakshooter.

The Flex probe is ideal when you are working in awkward areas where you have difficulty in accessing very small connectors. The flexible 400 mm sensor may be used with both function AUTO or MANUAL. The best way to find the leak is to use the flexible probe and then the camera to take a picture of your leak.
The Flexprobe
The LKS PROBE Contact probe is specifically used for steam trap and mechanical applications (worn bearings, gears, etc). The LKS contact probe can be used to check steam traps and quickly hear internal flow through steam traps and valves. With the probe it is possible to detect anomalies (permanent leak of steam for example). Once again, when the defect is detected, you can take a picture and insert it in your report.

Level 1 Health and Safety in a Construction environment
This qualification is suitable for learners wishing to develop knowledge and understanding in health and safety and is ideally suited to operators who wish to achieve the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) “Green Card” status within a construction environment.
It will prepare learners for further learning and training. It is also designed to prepare learners for employment.
Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment (QCF) includes a training package to assist with the delivery to learners. The qualification is assessed by a multiple choice question paper.
Learners wishing to obtain the CSCS green operator card will still have to take the CSCS Health and Safety touch screen test.
Green Card (Industry Accreditation – Standard) who is this for?
This card is for construction operatives employed in general site work.
How is this achieved?
The card is gained through Industry Accreditation only, so applicants must be employed in general site work.
Learners must complete the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment (QCF) and pass the CS Operative Health and Safety touch-screen test. For information on booking the health and safety touch-screen test contact Logis-Tech at 00 44 141 423 6911.
How long is this valid for?
The card is valid for five years. The card is renewable upon application, providing the requirements are met.
How do I apply?
To apply or renew, use the CSCS Smart card and include:
- Copy of the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment (QCF)
- Letter confirming that the learner has passed the CSCS Operative Health and Safety (touch-screen) test
- One good quality passport-size photo with a light background fixed in the box in Section A of the form
- The application fee of £30 (current fee at the time of writing)
Who is it for?
This qualification is designed for learners who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding in health and safety in a construction environment, enabling them to work effectively and efficiently in the workplace. It also provides a route for operators wishing to achieve CSCS green card status within a construction environment.
The minimum age is 16 years.
ITA funding of £200 is available to those in Scotland who earn less than £22000 per year, receive benefits (universal credit, jobseekers, etc,…) and nil income. This makes the course frre for these candidates.
